Solution-Focused - My theory is eclectic which means I use the best from each relevant theory according to the situation and concerns of my client. The main protocol that I use is Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), which also addresses attachment and traumatic problems. There may be times when it is important to dip back into the past, but it is always with the intent of healing a situation that is in the present. If needed, I will help you identify the triggers in your current situation which in turn may support you in developing insight into how your thoughts and emotions are affecting your behavior. Often, an amazing result of EMDR is a significant drop in anxiety, depression and distress. Once this occurs, only appropriate anxiety or stress occur in response to a situation and the past is no longer disruptive to the present issue. Then we look to your future and I support you in developing strategies to effectively manage your life. This may involve strengthening your existing coping skills and possibly learning new skills.
Person-Centered - It is my belief that the client determines the direction of counseling. If I have concerns that are outside the identified areas of treatment, I may bring them up, but it is ultimately the client's decision to determine whether they want to address these issues.
Christian Counseling - My focus is person-centered and I meet my clients where they are. You do not have to be a Christian to consider counseling with me. In fact, many of my clients are not Christian and they receive the same professional counseling that my Christian clients receive. However, for those who are Christian, at times, religious or spiritual matters impact their perspectives and thought processes and they need a Christian counselor with the skills and knowledge to address their concerns within the context of their relationship with God. A key verse for Sync Counseling is Romans 12:2 - "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is -- His good, pleasing and perfect will."
